September 24, 2025: Vinay Bhargava, PTF’s Chief Technical Advisor and Blair Glencorse, Co-CEO of Accountability Lab, have issued a call for the World Bank to take civil society and citizen engagement more seriously. The call, published in Durham University’s Global Policy Journal, is entitled “The World Bank’s Legitimacy Is Derived From Citizens, Now More Than Ever”.
The article argues that the World Bank can increase the accountability, efficiency, and effectiveness of its work by involving citizens and civil society more effectively, not just through consultations, but also in monitoring project implementation. Ensuring this becomes normal requires both funding and the issuance of new guidelines for projects.
